Alicantes tourism industry grew significantly in 2024, becoming one of the top global destinations. The city’s stunning coastlines, beaches, and inland areas drew millions of visitors. Both coastal and inland tourism saw a rise in demand, particularly during the holiday season, with many hotels filling up. Coastal areas had over 80% occupancy on New Year’s Eve, while inland areas had a 74% occupancy rate, which was higher than the national average.
Alicante is a beautiful coastal city in the province of Valencia and part of Spain’s Costa Blanca that has become increasingly famous for its tourism industry but the year 2024 provided the most outstanding growth for this sector. From beautiful beaches and the sea to the mountains and the country’s interior, the tourism industry in Alicante reached new towering heights as a destination that broke records as the most popular in the world and a haven for millions of holidaymakers.
The tourism season for Alicante’s coast and interior has been enviable because the demand is rising both in coastal and interior zones. It was an active year in the province, with high occupancy levels noted for the entire year, but more especially during the last quarter and the holiday period up to the end of December 2024.
In the Costa Blanca, the local merchants and traders expressed much satisfaction with the New Year’s Eve bed occupancy rate that rose to over 80%, though half a percent below the previous year where the calendar was far more friendly. Despite being slightly below the level recorded in the same period last year, this figure is an indication of the region’s tourism business. Once again, the inland locations provided healthy returns, with 74% occupancy rates, which is nine percentage points better than the national performance.
Mayte García, the general secretary of Hosbec, an association of hotel chains, said that the average rate of occupancy was 80% along the coast and in some places—above. She attributed this success to a mix of factors: a continuation of the repeated visits customers generate and the pursuit of improvement by local stakeholders. Facilities in the hotel and resorts in Alicante have on and on improved their services in order to comply with the changing needs and wants of the demanding customers with different programs.
Success in tourism development did not end at the beaches in Alicante. People understood another dimension of tourism: that inland regions also experienced a rise in tourism adventure. Research conducted among the participants of Turisme Comunitat Valenciana, the regional tourism promotion bureau, confirmed that the rural tourism segments were attracting a large number, however, with the help of good reports from niche tourism bodies.
This experience of operations from the coastal areas is however in line with other general trends where tourists look for different experiences, from relaxations on natural beaches to quiet small towns and cities, beautiful historical and architectural sights and beautiful natural hiking trails.
The Valencian Community that hosts Alicante ended the year at a very positive level with coastal accommodations closely following last year’s 75% occupancy level and the inland accommodations though recorded a drop in occupancy, were able to perform strongly throughout the year. Valencia City itself recorded only respectable 64% occupancy, which is an indication of the diverse nature of the attraction of this region to clients.
The Regional Minister for Innovation, Industry, Trade and Tourism, Marián Cano, highlighted the work done by the business community as well as the local councils in making the region what it is today. She pointed to sustainability, innovation, and systematic commitment to quality tourism products that paved the way for strengthening Alicante as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain.

The statistics do not lie: in the first ten months of the year 2024, the Valencian Community received more than 10 million international visitors, an incredible 16.3% more than before. These visitors spent €13 billion while in the country, thus growing at a rate of 23·1% year on year. Several months had also seen a boost in passenger traffic in Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport, which cements its position as one of Spain’s rapidly expanding airports as well as a significant cargo airport.
As the region continues to attract international visitors, it’s clear that Alicante’s appeal will only continue to grow in the years ahead.
