The Radisson Blu Hotel, Bengaluru, Outer Ring Road has also set a benchmark of sustainability by getting the LEED Zero Carbon Certification. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED certification provided by the USGBC entails the hotel to embrace the goal of having zero carbon footprint through embracing of effective energy efficiency measures and acknowledging the hotel’s environmental stewardship.
The LEED Zero Carbon Certification is a relevant award for buildings, which achieved the net zero carbon status because emissions were reduced or balanced with climate benefits over one year. This accreditations comes on the heels of another success this year when it was beating all competitors to be the first hotel in India to receive the LEED V 4.1 Platinum Certificate due to excellent performance under operation and maintenance of an existing building.
Radisson Blu, Bengaluru, Outer Ring Road has implemented many effective strategies towards environmental management with key focus on the emitter reduction. New on-site solar plant provides electricity for the whole hotel, so the hotel is a net zero energy usage. Many of the guests’ commute vehicles are electric vehicles which require power, and this is derived from the Mak solution hotel solar plant.
Still, apart from energy, the hotel also pays particular attention to waste and water issues. It has an in – institution bio- gas plant in which bio- gas is produced through the digestion of organic waste for use in the preparation of food in the staff canteen. The co-product of this process is organic sludge, which is used for manure to the hotel’s gardens hence no use of organic manure. This circular waste management system is for the first time in the industry in the Indian hospitality sector.
Water Conservation and Waste Reduction
Radisson Blu has implemented a robust water conservation strategy. The hotel captures and reuses rainwater, with over 40% of its roof area used to store rainwater. This water is filtered and used for domestic purposes, contributing significantly to reducing its water consumption. Additionally, the hotel’s laundry system operates entirely on circular water, thanks to its Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) that recycles up to 40 kilolitres of laundry water per day. The water is further processed through a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and advanced filtration methods to ensure its quality for reuse.
One of the hotel’s most notable efforts in waste reduction is the elimination of single-use plastic bottled water. The hotel has installed an in-house water bottling plant that refills glass bottles used in guest rooms, restaurants, and banquet facilities. This system prevents more than a tonne of plastic waste each year, reinforcing the hotel’s dedication to sustainability.
