A significant transportation and tourism transformation is approaching for Delhi as water taxis prepare to launch on the Yamuna river. Transport secretaries from NCR states gathered to evaluate a proposal that includes launching 20–25 passenger boats that will ferry passengers down the river. This water taxi project fulfills an important campaign commitment of the new BJP administration to revitalize the Yamuna River.
The upcoming water taxi system will serve four specific station points, which include Madanpur Khadar, Film City, Nizamuddin and ITO. The chosen points aimed to create better connectivity between commercial zones with residential zones and recreational centers to establish boats as a substitute for subway and street transportation.
Infrastructure and Feasibility Studies
The project needs a detailed feasibility study that must occur before actual implementation. IWAI has emphasized that developing water transport requires hydrostatic water levels in the range of 1-1.2 meters. Development plans for the Yamuna riverfront include both transportation needs and recreational development. A hydrography survey together with a traffic study need to be conducted to validate the project.
Government’s Commitment to Yamuna Rejuvenation
The BJP-led Delhi government views the Yamuna restoration as their primary governance objective so they have put it at the center of their administration’s focus. The water taxi project implements an integral part of government plans to reconstruct the river ecosystem and establish sustainable urban transportation systems. The successful implementation will create a calmer traffic flow and provide environmentally sustainable beauty to travelers between residential areas and central zones, as both commuters and tourists can use this system.
Funding and Project Timeline
The National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) ordered IWAI to present its feasibility studies along with project reports to them. The board aims to fund the projprocess, ough its investigation process which should be completed within two weeks. Once approved, the initiative could see rapid progress, potentially revolutionizing Delhi’s transport landscape.
